Our Catholic Therapy Approach

Grounded in Catholic Philosophy

When caring for people with mental health and/or addiction issues, many professionals focus on symptom relief and focus most of the attention of care on the body. Our Lady of Good Counsel (OLCG) Therapy acknowledges the importance of the body in the process but is unique in providing care to parts of the person that we can’t see such as the will, memory, imagination, thoughts, and emotions. OLGC Therapy aims at harmonizing the body and soul integration based on a Catholic understanding of human development, philosophy, and psychology in union with current evidence-based practices, including but not limited to Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Developmental Psychology. OLGC Therapy also emphasizes virtue development and discovering what gives the person’s life meaning and purpose.

Why See A Catholic Therapist?

The mental health field can benefit people; however, not everything it teaches is rooted in Catholic values. Our Lady of Good Counsel (OLGC) Therapy is unique because we harmonize current mental health practices with Catholic traditions that have allowed people to flourish and find meaning for thousands of years.

Catholic therapy is distinct from other forms of therapy due to its integration of Catholic faith and teachings into the therapeutic process. This integration allows Catholic therapists to address mental and emotional challenges while considering the moral, ethical, and spiritual dimensions of one's life. It involves providing guidance in alignment with Catholic doctrine, supporting spiritual growth, addressing spiritual wounds or conflicts, and recognizing the significance of sacraments and religious practices in the healing journey. This unique approach caters to the specific needs and beliefs of Catholics, offering a holistic perspective on mental health and well-being.

Meet Billy MPS, LADC, LPCC

I am humbled to be trusted with people's stories and to collaborate with individuals and families to unlock their potential and become who God created them to be. I work with ages 12 and up using individual, family, and group therapy.

I encourage all clients to explore what gives their life meaning and fulfillment, integrating virtue development and focusing on telling the truth, taking responsibility, and practicing forgiveness. My philosophy of care focuses on skill development based on evidence-based practices such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectal Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing, Developmental Psychology, Family Systems Theory, Narrative Therapy, and spirituality. I am a practicing Catholic, an active member of my parish, and the Catholic Psychotherapy Association. I offer Catholic spirituality integration into therapy sessions at the client's request.

I have several years of experience working with various cultures and belief systems in residential and outpatient treatment settings, providing individual, group, and family therapy. I counseled adolescents and adults struggling with substance use, school-related issues, behavioral problems, anger, perfectionism, lack of trust in authority figures, self-harm, suicidality, and victims of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. Consequently, I developed clinical skills and a thorough understanding of treating individuals with co-occurring disorders, including but not limited to anxiety, depression, ADHD, PTSD, attachment disorders, substance use disorders, oppositional defiance disorder, and obsessive/compulsive disorders. In addition, I have experience working with athletes struggling with performance anxiety and the development of a strong mental mindset.

I obtained a master's degree from the University of Minnesota Integrated Behavioral Health Program with a Youth Specialization Minor. I am dual licensed as a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) and Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) in the state of Minnesota.
